Welcome to the website of the Research Group on Human Capital of UQAM\u2019s School of Management (ESG UQAM).<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The main objective of the Research Group on Human Capital<\/strong> (Groupe de recherche sur le capital humain<\/em>) is to contribute to the economics research on all aspects of human capital<\/strong>, using mainly a microeconometric approach based on survey microdata representative of the population or on administrative data. The Group\u2019s research themes include notably education, labor and well-being, and concern above all children, youth and families<\/strong>. One of the priorities of the Research Group on Human Capital is to study the effects of public policies on human capital and its development broadly speaking, as well as on inequalities.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Celebration – Ten years, it’s something to celebrate!<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n

The Research Group on Human Capital is celebrating its tenth anniversary! In a combo of festivities, the Research Chair in Intergenerational Economics (CREEi) and the GRCH are jointly celebrating their tenth anniversary, as well as the renewal of the CREEi for the next five years. Come join Raquel Fonseca and Marie Connolly, co-chairs of the CREEi, for a discussion panel (in French) moderated by Nathalie de Marcellis-Warin of CIRANO on research and public policies featuring Catherine Haeck (ESG UQAM), Marie-Louise Leroux (ESG UQAM) and Pierre-Carl Michaud (HEC Montr\u00e9al). The panel will be followed by a cocktail where you will be able to catch up with those who contributed to the activities of the GRCH and CREEi over the past ten years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event will take place at the Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al, building Sherbrooke, 200 rue Sherbrooke Ouest (Place-des-Arts metro station), room SH-4800, from 4pm to 7pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zacharie Blanc finishes his Masters’ thesis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

December 2025 – Congratulations to Zacharie Blanc, who has submitted his Master’s thesis! In his thesis, Zacharie attempts to measure the extent of underreported income by self-employed workers in Quebec. Unlike employees, self-employed workers are able to underreport their income, since they are not subject to third-party reporting requirements. Using a microeconomic approach based on consumer spending on food, he found that self-employed workers underreported between 17% and 22% of their actual income over the period from 2010 to 2019.
His work was co-supervised by Andrei Munteanu and Marie-Louise Leroux. The thesis is available here<\/a>, and the GRCH has made the codes used to generate the results, as well as the data access procedure, available on the GRCH Dataverse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Professor Marie Connolly received funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) as part of the Insight Grants 2024 competition for a project titled “Intergenerational Income Mobility in Canada: Exploiting Innovative Data Linkages to Boost Mobility.” This project is joint with, among others, Catherine Haeck and Xavier St-Denis, both GRCH researchers. Lo\u00efc Courtemanche finished his Masters and starts his doctoral studies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Lo\u00efc Courtemanche completed his master thesis entitled “Descriptive Analysis of Intergenerational Income Mobility and the Transmission of Its Components” (in French). His research involved describing the composition of income and presenting the intergenerational transmission of these various components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He demonstrates that the increase in income transmission mainly stems from labour earnings. The fact that the first income quintile is more affected by this decrease in mobility is due to the rise in inequalities across the three main types of income: earnings from labour, capital, and self-employment. This reduction in mobility is mitigated by the increase in income inequalities from benefits coupled with the low transmission of this type of income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thesis is available here<\/a> and the GRCH has provided the codes used to generate the results, as well as the procedure for accessing the data, on its Dataverse<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lo\u00efc conducted his research under the supervision of Professors Marie Connolly and Raquel Fonseca. He started his Ph.D. at INRS in 2025. Congratulations to him!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

February 2024 – Marie Connolly and Catherine Haeck just published the article Intergenerational Income Mobility Trends in Canada<\/a> in the latest issue of the Canadian Journal of Economics<\/em>. Stemming from a multi-year effort and data development funded by the Fonds de recherche du Qu\u00e9bec – Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 et Culture, in partnership with Statistics Canada, this article shows that intergenerational income mobility has declined in Canada between the cohorts of children born in the early sixties to those born in the mid-eighties. This article, Child Penalties in Canada<\/a>, was coauthored with Marie M\u00e9lanie Fontaine, former Ph.D. student at the GRCH, and is the fruit of her doctoral thesis. January 2024 – GRCH members have released three new working papers in the GRCH series of working papers.
